The Blueair 680i SmokeStop is part of Blueair’s 'New Classic' range of air purifiers and was released in January 2017. It is the follow up model of the ‘650E’ model. The Blueair 680i SmokeStop has an improved airflow rate of up to 22% - 1015 m3/h on speed setting three compared to the 832 m3/h of the previous 600 series model. The filtration technology used, size, weight and the overall look of the unit is however unchanged. What the Blueair 680i SmokeStop does offer is a new air quality monitor, a ‘hidden’ interface with touch buttons under a flip-up lid on top the unit, Wi-Fi connectability and an accompanying app.

With the Wi-Fi capability, the Blueair 680i SmokeStop air purifier, can connect with your smartphone via a Wi-Fi network and allows you to make changes to how the unit operates. This can be done via the Blueair Friend App which is compatible with Android and iOS smartphones. Just like the ‘650E’, the Blueair 680i SmokeStop air purifier has a built-in sensor designed to detect changes in VOC’s and PM2.5. In addition, the 680i SmokeStop also offers humidity and temperature sensing capabilities.

The Blueair 680i SmokeStop has Blueair’s activated carbon filtration along with the normal particulate filter for the removal of light gas and odour contamination.

  • With the Blueair 680i SmokeStop air purifiers Wi-Fi capabilities, you now have the ability to pair your Blueair 680i SmokeStop air purifier to your smartphone via your home internet. To be able to operate your Blueair 680i SmokeStop remotely, you will need to download the ‘Blueair Friend App’ from the App Store or Google Play to your iOS or Android device. With the Blueair Friend App installed, you can now adjust the airflow of the unit, set the LED intensity, turn the child lock on and activate or deactivate the night mode setting. In addition, you are also able to check the units Wi-Fi status, monitor PM2.5, VOC levels, check the filter life indicator and set the auto mode. According to the Blueair 600 series manual, the LED intensity feature changes the LED intensity of the visible lights on the unit. The night mode allows the activation and deactivation of certain settings at specific times.

    Blueair 280i SmokeStop Air Sensor

  • 2. Sensor
  • The sensor is in the Blueair 680i SmokeStop is the same sensor as used in the ‘Blueair Aware’ air quality monitor. It is different from the one used in the 650E model as it is designed to detect changes in temperature and humidity levels in addition to PM2.5 and VOC’s. Blueair have specified within the ‘Blueair Friend App’ that the sensor is capable of measuring over ‘900 different gases ’, including Toluene and Formaldehyde which is then summarised into a single figure within the Blueair friend app for you to see. The sensor in the Blueair 680i SmokeStop also allows you to use the auto mode, which adjusts the fans automatically based on the levels of contamination detected by the unit. For more information regarding the sensor, please check the ‘sensor’ description under the ‘features’ section

  • 3. Airfow
  • The Blueair 680i SmokeStop has a higher airflow level of approximately 22% on the highest speed setting when compared to the previous model. The increase is achieved by increasing the air inlet and outlet areas on the unit. Blueair has specified the airflow rates of the Blueair 680i SmokeStop as 235 m3/h on speed setting one, 430 m3/h on speed setting two and 1015 m3/h on speed setting three. This is compared to the 650E which has airflow rates of 152 m3/h on speed setting one, 350 m3/h on speed setting two and 832 m3/h on speed setting three. The Blueair 680i SmokeStop is also able to offer 5 air changes (as recommended by the manufacturer) per hour based on a 72m2 room and a ceiling height of 2.4 metres.

  • 4. Display
  • The Blueair 680i SmokeStop has touch buttons which have been hidden under a flip-up lid which is located on top of the unit. The touch buttons allow you to make numerous changes to the way your unit operates. The Wi-Fi status button, A), turns blue when the unit is connected to a Wi-Fi network and turns grey when it is not connected. Button B), allows you to power the unit on/off and switch between the three different speed settings of the fans. Button C), is the filter life indicator, this will be blue by default and will turn orange when it is time to replace the filter. The next button on the touch display is the auto button, D), once the auto mode has been enabled, the unit will adjust the fans according to the levels of contamination detected. The VOC’s, E), and PM2.5, F) buttons, will remain blue if the levels of contamination are at a low level and may change to orange if the levels become elevated.

  • 5. Design and Durability
  • The Blueair 680i SmokeStop has been given the same design as the previous model, has dimensions of (26 x 20 x 13") (66 x 50 x 33cm) and weighs (15Kg). As such it can easily be positioned next to walls or in narrow spaces and also comes with castors to make moving it around easier. The unit has a metal body, a white/grey gloss finish and has the same style Blueair are famous for.

Below is a comparison table which shows what the differences are between the Blueair 600 series range of air purifiers.

The Blueair 680i SmokeStop, as with all other Blueair air purifiers, uses a Three-Stage Progressive Filter – a filter that resembles having many filters in one.
The filter is made up out of three different levels of millions of ultra thin fibers, and with its ‘lock-in’ design, once captured the particles are not re-released back into your environment, even when the filter is heavily loaded.

The first layers capture larger particles like pollen and dust, and the later layers capture smaller particles like bacteria and exhaust particles. The 680i SmokeStop filter kit includes three filters with enhanced active carbon; one for each side that clean air is released from the unit.

Regular air purifier filters are thinner and mostly consist of the same fiber size and material throughout, this leads to them clogging up sooner. However, the unique design of the Blueair 680i SmokeStop Three-Stage Progressive Filter resists clogging, and allows the 680i to perform longer on its peak performance.

When the filter needs to be replaced (around every six months), just open the lid, take out the old filter and put the new one in. No screws, hooks or tools are needed.
